Statement from Nancy Abruzzo 2230UTC/2330BST Monday 4th October

The Organising Committee of the 54th Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett has received the following statement from Nancy Abruzzo, the wife of Richard Abruzzo, one of the two pilots in the USA2 team:

From: Nancy Abruzzo

While the search for my husband, Richard Abruzzo and his co-pilot Dr. Carol Rymer-Davis is officially over, the search is continuing in an unofficial capacity and I will soon be heading home to New Mexico. We still need to find something, Richard and Carol didn't just disappear.

There has been an unprecedented level of search and rescue for 6 days off the Adriatic coast with military assets from both the Italian and US governments.

As I get ready to leave, it gives me great comfort in knowing this is a populated area and the admiral we've been working with is passionate about finding some answers. This is not a remote area, there are many concerned people who live and work around the land and water.

My brother, is staying behind in Bari continuing to wait for answers we know will come. Right now I need to get back home. I need to get to my kids, they need me and I need them. Everything that can happen in Italy is happening.

I continue to be so grateful to all the people, including the media, who have been so loving and supportive of me and my family.
