Overnight news from the Control Centre

The control room has a 24 hour web cam going and they were surprised to see Croatia Air Traffic Control comment on it "we have just spoken to the Swiss balloon and can see you on the web cam." The control room asked them to pass on good luck to the Swiss team which they did before turning around to look at the web cam to see written out on a piece of paper "HELLO CROATIA ATC", which made them smile very much.

Overnight incredible things happened. To compy with Italian aviation law and the race rules balloons had to be five nautical miles off the coast of any Italian land if they were in Italian airspace. Corsica is in Frence airspace and Sardinia in Italian airspace. David Hempleman Adams and Simon Carey were heading towards the boundary between the two and managed to keep inside the French airspace by just a few miles. Their race control rang the main race control to confirm they had done it! Meanwhile the remaining French and German balloons were playing with height to lose as much time as possible before they had to be forced to cross Italian mainland, which of course had to be done under the daytime conditions of 30 minutes before sunrise - their only option was to "lurk" around the middle of the sea between Corsica and Sardinia and the mainland.
